BIGGS - August 2014 Highlights

The remaining episodes of Braceface will premiere on the channel on August 4th at 11:00, repeated at 16:00.

Dream Defenders (Adventure) will premiere on August 2nd at 11:00, repeated at 18:30.
Apart from Monster High and Pokémon movies, that's it.

New show on Cartoon City: Monkey King

I don't have any information on this show, but it says that it's from 2009.
As for the cartoon, I don't have any photos, but wait! I took a couple of captures!

CANAL PANDA - August 2014 Highlights

C.R.A.F.T.Y. Kids Club: a French cartoon where four students, Claire, Ben, Li-Mei and Matt, all aged 7-8, create various objects from scratch. It's Art Attack without the instructional elements and with more fictional elements.
Premieres August 11th at 08:30, repeated at 19:45

New episodes of Doraemon premiere on August 2nd at 15:00. I'm pretty sure that we will get episodes from 1985.

BRINKEN - New Chinese cartoon on Canal Panda from August 1st

Canal Panda is premiering yet another Chinese cartoon with an awful dub. Can you guess what I'm talking about? Read the title
Brinken is not new to me, but it's another cartoon from Guangdong Alpha Animation and Culture - the makers of Flash and Dash and Hover Champs, and also Infinitiy Nado, Blazing Teens and Fruity Robo (these last three never aired over here).
If you live in China, South Korea or Vietnam, then you may recognize this cartoon. I'm pretty sure that it aired in the Middle East as well.
This is another attempt to cash in on the popularity of a now unpopular product: Infinity Nado is based on Beyblade, while this show is based on Tech Deck.
Here's my attempt at the show's description:
The show is set in the near future (understand it as a couple of years from now), where Tech Deck ripoffs are considered as being popular, to the extent that there's a competition (just like with other Alpha-Auldey properties like Hover Champs and Flash and Dash). Elma is Alon's friend and Elma's father creates a sort of analog tech deck/finger skating item.
Anyway, the plot point of some of these cartoons is "let's win this competition!", which is something the scriptwriters for these shows generally like to do. Here's an episode of the English dub:

You will see an awful dub with the same VAs as the other Alpha-Auldey shows.
BRINKEN is set to premiere on Canal Panda on August 1st at 08:00, repeated at 21:30.

The Life and Times of the Worst Portuguese Dubber

Cartoon World Portugal presents the closest thing available to a biography dedicated entirely to the worst dubber of all time: one whose name hasn't been revealed.
Little to nothing is known about his life, his age, his name. All we know is that he has been dubbing a quarter of what you see nowadays.
In 2009, he signed a contract with Dialectus to dub some characters for shows like Ben 10. Outside of Dialectus, he went on to work for Johnny Test. In 2012, he expanded his horizons with Chinese cartoon Hover Champs.
He later left Dialectus because the studio went under administration. He started to voice one character on Gombby, owing to the lack of available VAs.
Recently he dubbed for a special, musical episode of Dora the Explorer. Owing to a lack of multiple men, he decided to sing in all songs and annoy us with his annoying voice.
No one knows his name.

Animax: Rise and Fall of a Channel

Inspired by Ákos's take on the situation, with the name being a reference to a documentary series he watched 2-3 years ago, here's my take on the rise and fall of Animax in Portugal, with a reference to Locomotion.
Anime has been airing on Portuguese television since the mid 70's at least. Back then, people couldn't distinguish anime from cartoons. If you ask someone in their 40's with the "what cartoons you liked when you were little?" they answer stuff like Maya the Bee, Wickie the Viking, Heidi, Marco and others.
Anime really catched on starting in the mid 90's. RTP and the newly-formed private broadcasters, SIC and TVI started airing anime to any great extent. It wasn't until 1996, when Dragon Ball premiered on Portuguese screens for the first time. The otaku community likes to thank Akira Toriyama and Fuji TV for that, and also the people who dubbed it.
Cable TV channels also offered anime as well. Canal Panda's most popular anime (until it got cancelled for the first time in 2010) was Doraemon, which was like learning English from Cartoon Network but in Spanish. Cabovisão (and later TV Cabo's satellite service) offered Locomotion, a channel from Latin America that was initially focusing on animation in general before becoming Animax's predecessor. Locomotion Iberia had to close in 2003, due to low ratings.
In 2007, AXN Portugal (and also AXN Spain) premiered Zona Animax, which could be a test for the new channel that was about to launch. And, in fact, they did. MEO was the first TV provider to carry it in April 2008 (together with Sony Entertainment Television, or Sony). Both channels launched on April 12th, 2008, and their dire fate came three to four years later.
The channel's first show at 21:30 was Ghost in the Shell. The first new anime to air on the channel was Initial D on May 25th. In March 2009 they premiered Insert Coin, a videogaming show from sister channel AXN. They premiered Shin-Chan in October 2009. They said that a Japanese version (with subtitles) was about to air, when, in reality, the Portuguese dub aired (the best one ever made).
At the start of 2010, the channel started to add some live-action content which led to the channel's eventual conversion in May 2010. As the months progressed, the channel started focusing more on live-action, which led to less anime hours. On May 8th 2011, the channel pulled the plug for good. It was replaced by AXN Black.
Eventually, the Animax dub of Shin-Chan premiered on Biggs in 2013.

which turns out that it came from Pinterest.

Just for starters: this is a weekly supplement that comes free with Correio da Manhã every friday (like Vidas, which is focusing more on celebrities, which has a magazine supplement on Saturdays and a Sunday supplement that has the Chinese horoscope).

Teen Titans on RTP 2 again

It seems that RTP 2 has started airing Teen Titans for the first time in at least seven years. Seasons 1-4 are being broadcast on Biggs at the moment, but I'm not sure which dub are they airing: the Biggs dub or the old dub from RTP.
Or is it Teen Titans GO!?
EDIT and ADDENDUM: 10:31, 10/07/2014: It's the Biggs dub of the original show.

Over here, new episodes of Rabbids: Invasion premiere today. I don't like that show.

Dia D 2014 on SIC

Once again, SIC's annual Dia D returns for some more promotion for the hit Disney movie of the summer.
We don't have enough information so far, but the only attainable information I could get includes promotion for the Planes sequel, the premiere of the original The Little Mermaid movie in a remastered version and Monsters Inc. returns for another showing.
More info will be revealed by Sunday or Monday.

Portuguese Disney blocks

1: CLUBE AMIGOS DISNEY
RTP 1, 1986-1991

The first Disney block to air in Portugal. It was hosted bu Júlio Isidro and it aired on Sunday afternoons, later on Saturday afternoons.
The show included movies, cartoons, theatrical shorts and DTV movies from the early Disney Channel (prior to the existence of the DCOMs).
2: CLUBE DISNEY
RTP 1, 1991-2001

A.K.A. Disney Club. Similar to the previous block. At first it aired on Saturday afternoons but then it moved to Saturday mornings.
3: DISNEY KIDS
SIC, 2001-now

The current Disney block, which premiered after RTP lost the contract to air Disney shows to a big extent. It airs exclusively on weekend mornings.
